Potted plants are pretty forgiving, as long as you get the basics right.

• Check the soil before you water it. Top few centimetres dry? Time to water. Still damp? Leave it alone.
• Most indoor plants prefer bright, indirect light, not direct sun through glass, which can scorch the leaves.
• Let pots drain properly and don't leave them sitting in water. Soggy roots are the most common way houseplants come to grief.
• A liquid feed every few weeks over spring and summer helps them along. Ease off over winter.
• Outgrowing its pot? That's a good problem, it means it's happy. Move it up a size when the roots start circling the bottom.
